What is a Journalism internship?

A journalism internship is a full- or part-time temporary position in a professional media operation, whether it be a newspaper, television station or ad agency. Students in all journalism sequences are encouraged to take part in at least one internship, for experience as well as course credit.

Read what our students write about their internships.

Students will receive emails about available internships via the journalism department listserve. Many of the best internships have very early application deadlines and some are highly competitive.

Employers: Listings must include

  • internship description
  • internship skills requirements
  • whether the internship is paid or unpaid
  • application deadline -- if you do not include a deadline, a 90 day deadline will be assumed
  • contact or application information

Frequently Asked Questions

Due dates for summer interns:

If you are registered for summer credit hours, your due date is Monday, August 6. If you are registered for fall credit hours, your due date is Friday, August 17.

If you miss your due date, you will receive an incomplete. In that event, please contact Kim Martin, and we'll set a new due date. Grade changes can be effected after your new due date.

Enrolling for an internship is a two-step process.

  1. Before you begin your internship, you MUST get an internship application to me. Your internship cannot be legal until you have done so.
  2. You must also register on ISIS for your credit hours. This is a variable-credit course, wherein you may choose 1, 2 or 3 credit hours. Default is one, so be sure to enroll for the number of hours you plan to earn. See the syllabus for details. You may register for the semester during which you intern, or for the semester immediately following your internship.

Your internship packet is due on Dead Day of the semester during which you perform your internship, or one week after your internship is complete, whichever comes first.

Please remember -- no plastic slipcases, no binders. Thanks. Questions? Email Kim Martin.

Why would I want an internship? What are the requirements?

Students can earn from one to three hours of course credit by registering for JOUR 402V, Internship; however, there are eligibility guidelines:

  • Junior status (completed 60 hours)
  • 2.50 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Completion of 10 hours in journalism.

Where can I find an internship?

Many students find their own internships through their business and collegiate contacts. However, the department receives many requests for interns every semester. These internships are posted online here.

Once I've found an internship, then what?

When you have found your dream internship, you must enroll for it through ISIS. You must also fill out an internship application, which is also available in the Journalism office. The application should be submitted to the internship coordinator as soon as you have landed your job. For specific course requirements, see the syllabus.

There may be a reason that you would want to register for internship hours during a semester during which you do not intern. For example, a student may want to register for fall hours (to fill out a schedule or to meet a grant or scholarship requirement) for an internship performed over the summer. This is perfectly OK. But you must let me know on your application form. In this case, then, your internship semester is Summer; your registration semester is Fall.
