Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism

Undergraduate Program

How the Journalism Program is structured

Our undergraduate program has three areas of emphasis (or sequences)

Within these sequences, students are trained in the following:

  • identifying, reporting and writing news
  • analyzing media audiences and their interests
  • creating and planning advertising and public relations campaigns
  • producing television programs
  • basic photojournalism computer-assisted publishing

Students in the undergraduate program follow an outline of courses which include "core" courses mandated by the University and Fulbright College, journalism requirements determined by the department, and a number of general electives, selected by the student and his/her adviser. Journalism majors frequently select electives in marketing, history, political science, English, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and art.

The department maintains a steady enrollment of about 340 majors. There are ten full-time faculty, and three instructors. Instructors are hired to teach certain specialty courses. A number of journalism courses emphasize skills; thus class enrollments tend to be 15-20, and students and faculty work closely together.
