Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism

Protocol

In most universities, student-professor relationships are governed by standard rules of etiquette. Most faculty prefer to be addressed by their surnames and may be offended by overly familiar address. You should not address professors by their first names unless they specifically ask you to do so. The title "Professor" followed by the surname is always appropriate. Some faculty who have earned doctorates prefer to be addressed as "Doctor," followed by the surname.

In our department, titles are as follows:

Doctors:

  • Ignatius Fosu, Ph. D.
  • Phyllis Miller, Ph.D.
  • Katherine Shurlds, J.D.
  • Patsy Watkins, Ph.D.
  • Jan Wicks, Ph.D.

Professors:

  • Dale Carpenter, M.A.
  • Larry Foley, M.A.
  • Eric Gorder, M.Ed.
  • Gerald Jordan, MSJ
  • Kim Martin, M.A.
  • Hoyt Purvis, M.J.
  • Rick Stockdell, M.A.

Faculty members are encouraged to leave their doors open while advising students of the opposite sex. Charges of sexual harassment will be referred immediately to university officials.

Sexual harassment of students includes:

  • unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct which takes place;
  • when submission to the conduct is either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's academic status or advancement;
  • when submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for academic decisions affecting that individual;
  • and/or when such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive learning environment. (See the Undergraduate Student Catalog for grievance procedures.)
