The
Journalism Department offers students opportunities for developing
leadership capabilities and networking with other students with similar
interests. The Department also provides students with a number
of media outlets for campus and community.

KUAF/National
Public Radio
Our department
is responsible for the operation of KUAF, 91.3 FM, the University's
National Public Radio affiliate. Associate
Professor Rick Stockdell is station manager and works with
other radio professionals to operate KUAF 24 hours a day.
KUAF features four full hours of in-depth news weekday
mornings (Morning Edition) and afternoons (All Things Considered).
Classical music is programmed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and
from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Weekends feature
a mix of blues, jazz and folk music, as well as entertainment programming
like Car Talk, Whad'Ya Know and A Prairie Home Companion.
Journalism students work part time at KUAF in the
newsroom, on-air and in other areas. Part-time work and internships
are available. |

The
independent Arkansas Traveler, the student newspaper, is published
three times weekly. Journalism students are invited
to apply for positions that include section editors, reporters, photographers
and production staff.

The Ozark Review, a literary magazine published
twice a year.

Television Programming Opportunities for Students Live nightly Newsbriefs, written, produced and anchored by senior
students in an advanced television reporting course, Monday through
Thursday.
Audio newscasts produced and broadcast on UATV Monday through Thursday
by students in basic broadcast courses.
Original 30-minute news/interview program, Arkansas on Campus,
produced weekly by students in an upper level broadcast reporting
course.
On the Hill, a monthly 30-minute news magazine program sponsored
by seniors in an advanced television news production course.
Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Productions, which have
included Cultural Sensitivity on Campus (a forum on cultural and
ethnic awareness at UA), Associated Student Government Debates
and other panel discussions, news features and studio audience
productions.
U of A Programs produced by other departments and colleges at UA,
including the band and music departments, UA recruiting tapes and
sports highlight programs.
Planning and producing programming for a 24-hour 7-day TV station
(UATV) broadcast locally over cable Channel 14 from journalism
studio facilities.

The University of Arkansas yearbook, the Razorback, published its
100th edition in 1998. It has been a frequent national award winner
for design, content and overall quality.
All university students are invited to apply to work on the yearbook.
The editor is selected by the university board of publications,
but positions are available for copyeditors, photographers and
layout artists. Apply to 119 Kimpel Hall, or call 575-3305.

Activities
The Ad Club is for students who wish to participate in the Northwest
Arkansas advertising community. The Ad Club
is now online!

The U of A Journalism department sponsors
a student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Students in all journalism sequences work together on important
issues including the Freedom of Information Act and how to secure
media jobs after graduation. Every spring, the student SPJ chapter
sponsors the student government presidential debate, a program
that airs live on campus TV station UATV. In 1998, the UA SPJ
chapter was voted co-chapter of the year by the national SPJ,
over college chapters in Arkansas, Louisianna, Mississippi and
Tennessee.

The National Press Photographer's
Association is dedicated to photographic journalism.
Members include still and video photographers, editors
that are both students and business representatives.
The University of Arkansas NPPA provides students the
opportunity to meet working photographers, learn more
about their chosen field and establish contacts in
the working world of photography.

The UA Association of Black Journalists is a student
affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists, the world's
largest organization of journalists of color. Through a network of
10 geographic regions and culminating annually in a national convention,
NABJ presents journalism forums, seminars, workshops and job fairs
for professionals and students. NABJ also has an annual scholarship
program and summer intern program. |

The Public Relations Student Society of
America is an organization that strives to develop future public
relations practitioners who are well-informed and well-prepared professionals.
